Mixtapes and Yummy Mummies

This weekend, we’re serving up a double dose of fierceness with the release of a mad fun mixtape and a freshly uploaded blog on baby bumps and Tommy Lee.

Violin vs. Vinyl: The Mixtape, is a fiercely high-powered union from violinistextemist Kytami and hip hop beat maker and longtime collaborator, the PhonoGraff.   Amplifying the high-voltage string and scratch alliance–peppered with laser beat tension and epic scores, are the ragamuffin toastings of a certain Mista Chatman.  For Kytami and Phono fans, start dancing—you know you want to!

DIY maven Emm Gryner proves that running a mini record empire, touring the IKEA homeland, hobb-nobbing with Tommy Lee while holding back pregnancy-induced projectile vomit are not only achievable but a necessary reality of being a pop-rock superstar.  Told in honest, funny and punchy entries, Mumhum:  A Human Came Out Of My Vagina chronicles Emm’s stalwart stumbles into mommyhood, music, midwives and surviving Chinese water torture-like ultra sounds.  A fun read!

Vancouver, BC – The National  Alliance of Philippine Women in Canada (NAPWC) is proud to present its first ever benefit concert, Something Else, Something Fierce featuring an almost all-female Filipino Canadian line-up of celebrated  and emerging artists at  W2 Storyeum, on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Dubbed the “Toronto indie goddess,” three-time Juno award nominated singer and song-writer Emm Gryner will headline this diverse line-up of performers and DJs, all of whom represent what it means to be a dynamic artist of Filipino ancestry. Revolutionary electric-violinist Kytami will rock the stage with her intense fiddling. Among others who will grace the stage are smooth acoustic artist Eirene Cloma, jazz songbird Cherlyn Cortes, multi-disciplinary artist Mutya Macatumpag, and ground-breaking raptivist R.Two. The night will be cranked up by the eccentric DJ Miss M, awarded Toronto’s “best female DJ of the year” in 2010 and DJ Igzilla, best known for his urban interventions with his mobile DJ system.

“The women and artists are really very exciting, head-strong Filipino Canadians who have all initiated their own projects” said Something Else, Something Fierce coordinator Charlene Sayo.  “In line with the NAPWC’s values, we all aim to empower and transform our community through the arts.”

Proceeds from the concert will enable the NAPWC to advance its mandate for genuine equality and development for Filipino Canadian women.  Beyond breaking stereotypes that Filipino women are servile, domesticated women, the NAPWC develops national programs that enhance the community’s political and social involvement in Canada through community-based research projects and political advocacy.

The Emm Gryner Sampler

She toured with David Bowie.  Emm played keyboards and sung back up for daddy stardust. BACK UP.

Bono from U2 loves her.  Well, maybe not Emm, but her song, Almighty Loveso by default he does love her.

Emm is a Fashion Muse.  Her face launched a thousand shoulder bags designed by Matt and Nat.  Carrie Bradshaw never had it this good.

Emm’s a DIY master.  She started her record label, Dead Daisy Records when she was all of 22, and does everything from signing artists to snail mailing cd’s to rabid fans…

She can hold her own against Metal Heads…and leaves them wanting more.  It was Joe Elliott of Def Leppard who approached Emm to re-record Almighty Love as a duet on her latest album, Gem and I.  Emm sings on Rob Zombie’s The Sinister Urge.

Emm is Ireland’s adopted musical daughter.  Since releasing her album, Songs of Love and Death an ode to Irish pop songs, the Emerald Island can’t get enough of the Filipina-Irish Canadian singer.

She’s an angel.  According to Matt Nathanson.  He wrote a little ditty about Emm.  It’s called Angel.

Tried to promo the BieberBut Usher’s people snagged ‘em.

Emm’s got a thing for tall, dark and lanky.  But they gotta be a dead-ringer for Clint Eastwood.

Is half Pinay and pretty darn proud and loud about it.  Astig!
